Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee Mission / Statement of Purpose

Last Reviewed 11.1.2021

In service of the mission of the school (see Article II 2,3,4,5 of bylaws), the purpose of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee is to create and sustain a learning community that is secure and stimulating for children, parents, staff, and volunteers; that provides quality, low-cost care addressing the emotional and social needs of young children; and in which parents, teachers, children, and students from varying backgrounds in the community may come together to work and better understand one another.

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee strives to do this by attending to three areas of focus, which we see as interconnected and mutually reinforcing:

  1. Education – Supporting classroom curricula, parent workshops, professional development, and school culture that are rooted in the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion and work to combat unconscious, institutional, and structural bias affecting all members of our community;

  2. Composition – Supporting recruitment, admissions, and enrollment practices to increase the racial and economic diversity of our families, staff, and volunteers, leading to a better learning environment and increasing opportunity for all;

  3. Community Engagement – Helping members of the school community connect and support each other to engage in learning and action outside of the classroom and increase the visibility of Nonotuck as a welcoming and inclusive school.
